This week felt really long for some reason, there was a lot of info given to us in such a short period of time. Something that really stuck with me this week was when Dr. Sasha Kauffman came into class and talked about connections within the brain. He talked about the developing brain and the different studies that he’s done. Something that I thought was really interesting was when he talked about the likelihood of the different mental illnesses in males and females. It was interesting to me that autism was more likely to happen to males than it is to females. It was also interesting how hormones control what type of brain babies have. Higher hormones during birth means that they have a female brain and low hormones means that they have a male brain.
Something that I learned in humanities was the basic essay. I mean… I already knew the basics but I just forgot how to structure the whole thing. So learning all of the things again was nice to review before the SAT which is in 6 DAYS. Something that really hit me hard was the essay portion of the SAT. We took a practice essay and I think I did really bad. I didn’t even know how to write a thesis which was the worst part. Now that we have gone over the writing portion of the test I feel a little more confident with my essay. Next week I’m really excited to go to UCSD to visit to Dr. Sasha Kauffman’s lab to find out what they do there. I’m especially excited for when we visit the neurogaming lab with Dr. Leanne Chukoskie. Ms. Nuvia introduced me to her as a possible internship opportunity, but I never got around to emailing her about it. She has a company called BrainLeap which develops games for people with autism.
